Class Conflict in Chinua Achebe's "Vengeful Creditor"

Striving to have a better life has always been seen as a determination for many people and in “Vengeful Creditor” by Chinua Achebe it is no different. In comparison to the rich, the less fortunate have not had the opportunity to partake in the many opportunities that the wealthy are allowed to partake in and in this case it is the right to an education that is seen as the main conflict in “Vengeful Creditor.” Not that the lower class is forbidden to attend school, but the fees of school is the barrier which is preventing them from attending while the upper class need not worry about something such as this. I feel no matter where one comes from, education is extremely important for the simple fact that it can allow a student to pursue any career path that they wish. I do not believe students at their young age to totally understand how education could ultimately affect their lives in a positive way and all the benefits that come along with it; However, I do believe parents to understand the importance and that deep down each would do anything for their children to have a better life than they had. “Parents know the value of education and will make any sacrifice to find school fees for their children” (Achebe, 55). By allowing free education to all, the class structure is broken in a society and the upper class must suffer, however, once education is taken away the lower class must suffer and this is where class conflicts begin to develop. Due to the free primary, many people were affected and the first group to not benefit from it was the upper class. Class conflict begins to develop shortly after the government has passed the free primary law, which allows all its citizens the right to a free education. The law was primarily designated for the lower class due to the simple fact that they wouldn’t be able to afford school otherwise, however, in doing so it caused many problems within the government and society.
