I am profiling Ronald Alexander McDougall, Chairman and CEO of Brinker International.
Brinker International (NYSE: EAT) is the parent company of eight casual dining concepts: Chili’s, Macaroni Grill, On the Border, Maggiano’s, Cozymel’s, Corner Bakery, Rockfish and Big Bowl. Brinker International was established in 1991 to expand Chili’s Inc., and to develop and acquire additional concepts. As of March 26, 2003, Brinker International had 1118 company owned units and 252 franchise owned units. An additional 150 units are scheduled to open during 2003. The company, which has units in 49 states and 22 countries, had record sales of more than $3.4 Billion and saw its stock price break the $32.00 mark for the first time in 2002. The stock price at the close of trading on July 11, 2003, was $36.38. 2.
Ronald A. McDougall received a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration in 1964 and a Masters of Business Administration in 1965, both from the University of Wisconsin. 3.
After a brief stint as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army from 1965 until 1967, McDougall worked in the packaged goods departments of Proctor & Gamble during 1967 and 1968, Sara Lee during 1969 through 1972, and Pillsbury during 1972 until 1974. He served as Vice President of Marketing at S & A Restaurant Corporation, parent company of Steak and Ale from 1974 until 1982. During his tenure there he oversaw the launch of the company’s Bennigan’s concept in 1976. He moved to Burger King during 1982 and 1983, and joined Brinker International in 1983. He initially served as Executive Vice President of Marketing and Strategic Development until his promotion to President and Chief Operating Officer in 1986, a position he held until 1995. He became CEO of Brinker International in June of 1995. 4.
Ronald McDougall and Kay, his wife of 23 years, have one child, Matthew. McDougall also has two children, Timothy and Jonathan, from a previous marriage.4 5.
