Love has been undoubtedly one of the most common themes throughout literature. Readers find love in any era and written by almost all authors. From Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet to Dr. Seuss’s Horton Hears a Who, one thing remains constant love will always be a theme in literature. Since the early history of literature, love has been a major contributor to many poems, plays, stories and novels. Its role, however, is important because love, although a universal theme will always offer different twists and turns that make plots more interesting.

An interesting aspect to love is that it can hold so many different meanings throughout literature. At first a readers thought of love is the relationship between a man and women; a fairytale of sorts but that is not solely what love is. Love can be between two people as in Shakespeare’s well known, Romeo and Juliet but on another hand love can be between a person and something else as in Shirley Geok-lin Lim’s, Learning to love America. Furthermore, the theme of love leaves endless possibilities for literature.

One of the most well known stories of love is Romeo and Juliet, a story of two love birds and their unacceptable love for one another.
