Using material from Item A and elsewhere, assess the view that social class differences in educational achievement are the result of school processes such as labelling. Labelling is a process that happens within education where a definition is attached to a pupil as being a certain way. This can then affect them in their education in one of two ways. It can either push them and put stress on the pupil to achieve highly just as the teacher labelled them to do so or it can affect them so that they do not achieve because of the negative label that was planted on them. As Item A states, Becker found that teaches judged pupils according to how well they fitted an image of the ‘ideal pupil’. For Marxists, the ‘ideal pupil’ would be the student who could perform and work the way the Capitalist society expects and wants us to work so that the Bourgeoisie can continue rule. Middle- class students were more likely to fit this image and thus treated more favourably by the teachers. In doing so, these students would be pushed to achieve higher and get better grades, having the teacher’s attention and being given help and support when needed. It was also found that working-class pupils were negatively labelled as non-academic and even known as being ‘difficult’ and ‘hard-work’. These negative labels would leave the student to under-achieve as they are placed lower in the school and predicted to not achieve highly. However, material deprivation is a possibility to be an effect of social class differences with education. Those from a poor background, such as working-class students could under achieve because of factors at home such as small, limited space where the child has little room to do homework. Younger siblings crying will keep the pupil up so that lack of sleep causes them to have little focus in school. Material deprivation is a factor that causes underachievement not jut factors such as labelling. ‘Self-fulfilling prophecies’ are the outcome of the labelling...
