INTRODUCTION

The main aim of this paper is to examine whether there are significant differences in academic performance of students of …………. University with regard to their social background. There are social differences among students that create social inequality, mainly due to the existence of classes in society. Students representing different social classes can achieve different results in their career paths. The paper’s point of departure is that there are great deals of socio-economic factors that can affect the academic performance of the students. These include the education level of student’s parents, family income, the type of secondary education obtained and etc. All these elements altogether can define the social class of a student. In order to clarify the situation I am going to make a survey research at …….. University. The objects of study or the units of analysis are university students from various departments. I will try to make generalizations out of the sample size of 30 students interviewed. Moreover, I have conducted an extensive literature review on the factors that trigger unequal academic achievements among students. Therefore the aim of this project is to find out if there is a relationship between student’s level of academic success and their social class.

What is “social class”?

Class is a complex term, which is used in many different ways since eighteenth century. Different social classes can be distinguished by inequalities in such areas as power, authority, wealth, working and living conditions, education, religion, and culture. The basic hierarchical structure comprising the “upper classes”, the “middle classes”, the “working class” and the impoverished “under class”, remained relatively stable despite periodic and frequently violent upheavals1. Such a stratification often combines income, education, and social prestige or status into an index of socioeconomic status, creating a gradation from upper class to lower class. Thus, a modified class structure clearly remains in existence today, despite the Marxist view of the inevitability of class conflict and the establishment of classless communist society based on the equality of people. For Marx, classes are defined and structured with regard to work and labour and ownership or possession of property and the means of production. These economic factors more fully govern social relationships in capitalism than they did in earlier societies. Marx views the entire capitalist system as resting on conflicting principles and tendencies: “Contradictions” exist between the social character of production and the institution of private property; between the production for use and production for profit; between production and consumption and still others.
